A dog breeding agreement is the contract that two dog breeders, a male dog owner and a female dog owner, will draw up between them. Many times such a dog breeding agreement will include such things as compensation for each party as well as who gets how many puppies if puppies are formed from the union between the two dogs. Many times the male dog owner will simply agree to a stud fee for ’studding” out his male dog while the female dog owner will receive all the benefits for the puppies when she sells them. However, other times a dog breeding agreement will stipulate that each party will split the amount of puppies born, etc. Additionally, sometimes a dog breeding agreement will include the two dog owners just splitting the money after all the puppies are sold. If the male dog owner is going to be receiving some amount of puppies or some of the proceeds of their sale, then often he will agree in the dog breeding agreement to help to pay for the mother dog’s prenatal care. A dog breeding agreement is often a very legal document that is certified by a lawyer. Many professional dog breeders actually have standard dog breeding agreement contracts that they had a lawyer write up that they simply copy with each deal they make. Still others have a lawyer present at each deal they make. The latter option is the most appealing to ensure that everyone gets exactly what they want and that no party can cheat the other, but it is often the more expensive option. However, if you are creating a dog breeding business, at least consider having a lawyer write up a few basic dog breeding agreement contracts for you so that you know you are starting out on the right foot. A dog breeding agreement may also be taken up between a breeder and a potential customer. Many times, customers will come to dog breeders before the puppies are born, sometimes even conceived. In such an instance, a dog breeding agreement is drawn up, stipulating that the customer will receive his or her first (or second or third, etc.) choice of the puppies once they are born and ready to be weaned.
